trust fun: The thing about 9/11 is this:
- Yes, the past decade has been uniformly pretty shitty
- No one is disputing that
- But I’d love it if for once, people on this damn website would put aside their “I THINK MORE CRITICALLY THAN YOU!!!!!!” blue ribbons and just respect the fact that there were more than 2,000 innocent lives lost that day. No matter what justification you may come up with — American imperialism, hegemony, whatever — those people weren’t responsible for any of that. Bin Laden, Sheikh Mohammed, and their ilk weren’t assassinating specific American lawmakers or politicians responsible for the country’s previous actions. It wasn’t “a just payback.” It was mass murder, pure and simple, enacted by religious zealots who were so sure they would be absolved of their wrongs that they didn’t stop for a second to think that these people had committed no crime against their country or their faith, other than, it seems, being American and living in a different world.
- Stop trying to prove that you Care About Other Countries. Stop trying to prove that you Are A Global Citizen. Because at its core, this day isn’t about patriotism or freedom or America Being Da Best or whatever the fuck the Bush administration tried to say. This is about innocent lives that were lost in one of our nation’s worst tragedies. Was the United States an innocent victim? Diplomatically, no. But for fuck’s sake, respect the victims. Respect their families. Don’t write them off as “Well, we kinda had it coming!” collateral damage. Show some goddamn respect, you petulant little sock puppets.
